This Saturday, April 6, is going to be the 44th annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby in the Boone area!

The Trout Derby has been celebrating the opening of trout season for 4 decades  in Blowing Rock and there are plenty of activities and competitions of all ages!

The picnic shelter at Robbins Pool, 173 Lakeside Dr. Blowing Rock, NC 28605 is the Official Derby Headquarters this year. Favorite nearby fishing spots are Price Lake, Bass Lake, and the Middle Fork Road.

The Classic Tournament starts at sunrise and ends at 4pm. All trout caught in public Watauga County bodies of water are eligible for measuring. No pre registration or entry fees are required.

The Catch and Release starts at 7 am and does require registering at the Official Headquarters. All participants will be given a measuring tape and must take a timestamped photo of their catch in order for it to be judged. All photos must be submitted by 4pm.

For children 11 and under and those who have limited mobility, there is a special tournament at the local small lake, Lake Mayview, in Blowing Rock itself which will be stocked with trout so everyone can enjoy fishing.

For kids there also will be an art contest with prizes. There also will be free t-shirts for kids at the headquarters.

The Derby is a great time for all and definitely worth a day visiting!

Sugar Mountain Music Events in January

A nice bonus of visiting Sugar Mountain on Saturdays for the multitude of winter activities there is the live music in the afternoon.

During January, there is a different band each Saturday from 4-6pm. On January 13 it is the Glen Harlow and North Folk band who play a mix of acoustic bluegrass, country, and traditional music.

On the 20th is the Joe Randolph Band. They play retro blues, rockabilly, soul, surf, and swing music.

For the 27th is the Classic Highway band from here in Boone, NC. They play classic rock and souls music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. As well as country and blues.

Autumn at Grandfather Mountain

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Grandfather Mountain. Not only is the temperature perfect, but the fall colors are absolutely gorgeous. Fortunately, there are multiple events themed around the season for all to enjoy in addition to the normal trails.

September 30 through October 8 is the Fall Color Ramble. These are short guided tours by members of the staff who give guests the chance to learn about the different species of plants and animals native to Grandfather Mountain while hiking through the forested mountain.

On September 30 is the Creatures of the Night event which takes places from 6:30-9:30 and is a guided tour focused on visiting some of the mountain’s animals’ habitats at night to observe them such as bears and elk.

On October 14 is the All Day Fall Color Ramble. Taking place between 10 am and 3 pm, there will be many guided nature walks as well as naturalists talks throughout the day to learn about Grandfather Mountain in the autumn.

These and other activities, such as hiking to the Mile High Swinging Bridge, are even more breathtaking in autumn so this is a great time to go visit Grandfather Mountain.

Blowing Rock Trout Derby

To celebrate the opening of Trout season in the Boone area, April 1st is the 43rd annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby! There are many different activities for those of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.

The Classic Tournament starts at sunrise and ends at 4 pm. For this tournament, you catch trout in any Public body of water in Watuga County and bring it in for measuring at the Blowing Rock Clubhouse. Snowshoeing Tours at Sugar Mountain

For many, one of the most exciting parts of a vacation is trying new things! And Sugar Mountain offers what is likely new for many people: snowshoeing tours!

The Snowshoeing season on Sugar Mountain runs from December through March. During the week, snowshoe tours are offered every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, they are at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Both rentals of showshoes and the guided tour by an experienced guide are included. Adult tours are for those who are 12 years or older. Children’s tours are for those ages 8-11. You need to sign up at least fifteen minutes prior to your tour time at the Snowsports School building at the resort.

Wildlife Habitat Daily Programs at Grandfather Mountain

This October, and every April through October, Grandfather Mountain offers a guided tour through the special Animal Habitats in the mountain park! These are great opportunities to see each wild animal active in their natural habitat close to the overlook of their habitat.

On Grandfather Mountain, many of the native species such as the bears, otters, and elk have very large, designated wildlife habitats which have large moats or retaining walls in designated viewing era for guests. During a normal day, the animals are not consistently visible as the habitats are very large. But that is different on certain hours each day.

Daily, at certain hours, a keeper will bring special scents or toys out to entice the animals to come closer to the viewing area for people to enjoy them. The keeper will then offer interesting facts about the different animals. This happens daily every half from 11am through 4pm at the different habitats.

There is no additional fee to enjoy these wildlife habitats. They are included with the price of admission. You do need to schedule visits to Grandfather Mountain ahead of time though.
